Disneyland with Littles (Ages 2 & 4)

POV: You’re taking a 2 & 4 year old to Disneyland for the first time… and have NO idea where to start 😅✨

That was literally one of our child’s teachers—first trip in 15 years, two little girls, and all the questions.

So we built her a step-by-step Disneyland with littles game plan 👏
✔️ What to do first (without wasting your morning)
✔️ Rides that are actually worth it at ages 2–5
✔️ How to avoid long lines + meltdowns
✔️ Real-life pacing that won’t ruin your day

This isn’t a “do everything” guide… it’s a do the RIGHT things guide 💛

If you’re planning your first Disneyland trip with little ones, this will save you SO much stress.

2 Days Disneyland + 1 Day California Adventure

🛒 Food Plan (Do This First — Huge Time Saver)

 Grocery Pickup

  • Do a pickup at Walmart Supercenter or delivery to your hotel

  • This saves a ton of time, money, and prevents waiting in long food lines. If you have time, go in to the store to check out reasonably priced souvenirs.

Easy Breakfast in Hotel

  • Yogurt

  • Cuties / fruit

  • Oatmeal packets

    • Use hot water from the coffee maker

Bring:

  • Plastic spoons, paper cups

 Bring Food Into the Park

This helps more than anything with little kids.

Pack:

  • Uncrustables

  • Lunchables (easy lunch option)

  • Cuties

  • Go-gurt (freeze overnight so it stays cold)

  • Crackers/snacks

 Water Tip

  • Bring refillable water bottles

  • Ask for free ice water cups at quick-service spots

🏰 DAY 1 — Disneyland

 Rope Drop → Fantasyland

Start in Fantasyland

Do first:

  • Dumbo the Flying Elephant

  • King Arthur Carrousel

  • Mad Tea Party

  • It's a Small World

✔️ Mornings here are the best—short lines, slower pace, characters out

Fantasyland Wait Time Reality

  • A lot of people rope drop and go straight to Peter Pan’s Flight

  • That ride is almost always busy

  • Expect ~40 minutes even early

👉 Keep an eye on wait times and decide if it’s worth it for you

⚠️ Fantasyland Ride Heads-Up

These are all fine for all ages, but can feel a little spooky due to villains, darker scenes, and bold visuals:

  • Snow White’s Enchanted Wish

  • Pinocchio’s Daring Journey

  • Alice in Wonderland

  • Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride

Midday → New Orleans Square

  • Pirates of the Caribbean

    • Usually around 20 minutes

    • Line moves quickly

  • Haunted Mansion

    • Can get busy

    • Under 30 minutes is a good time to jump in

👉 Both rides can be a little spooky, but it’s all in good fun

Easy Reset ride nearby:

  • The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh

Big Decision Ride (This Sets Up Your Trip)

If your 4-year-old is tall enough (40”):

👉 Try:

  • Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

This is the perfect “starter coaster.”

🔁 Rider Switch (Use This Here First)

  • At the very beginning of the line, find a Cast Member

  • Tell them someone is staying back with a child

How it works:

  • First group waits in line

  • Second group comes back through Lightning Lane

  • You can scan up to 3 people

  • Make sure whoever goes through the line first has the Disney app and have the tickets shared with them so they can be scanned

👉 Use this for Thunder, and later for Space or Guardians

Key:
How your child does on Thunder will determine your plan for Days 2 & 3

 Toontown + Lunch Strategy

  • Go to Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway (opens later ~10 AM)

While in line:

  • Mobile order from Daisy’s Cafe

What to get:

  • Calzones

  • Nitro cold brew

    • One of the best-priced plain cold brews in the park

Pickup tip:

  • Set pickup for when you get off the ride

Where to eat:

  • Walk toward It's a Small World

  • Toontown has very little shade

 Evening Ride

  • Storybook Land Canal Boats
✔️ Way better at night (castle lights)

 Parade Plan

  • Paint the Night Parade

Times:

  • 8:30 (starts at Small World)

  • 10:30 (starts Main Street → ends Small World)

Best spot:

  • Near It's a Small World

Why:

  • Starts there → see it first and leave early

Tips:

  • Bring blanket in stroller to hold space

  • Some people line up two hours early. I don’t think this is necessary, keep an eye on the area and see if a Grandparent can sit and save spot

Bonus:

  • Make sure you can see the front of It’s a Small World – there are Projections onto the ride ~8:00–8:30, before the parade

 Midday Break (Highly Recommend)

  • Go back to hotel for a nap when crowds peak

  • Parks are busiest mid-day

👉 Best ride times:

  • Early morning

  • Late evening

🎡 DAY 2 — California Adventure

Rope Drop Options

If NOT doing thrill rides:

  • Start at Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue!

    • At rope drop, the line should be very short

    • You likely won’t need a buddy pass

👉 If later in the day and wait is over ~20-30 minutes, then ask about a buddy pass. The cast member will send you to the back of the ride and you can go in groups of two to fill in spaces on the ride

Another option is to do Ariel, it’s usually a walk on for the first part of the morning.

If doing thrill rides (based on Day 1):

  • Rope drop Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!

  • Use Rider Switch

🕷️ Web Slingers Strategy

  • WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure

Best move:

  • Use Single Rider line

Know this:

  • Child can sit on your lap

  • You likely won’t be in same car as your partner

  • You’ll get on much faster (standby can hit 45–60 min)

 Cars Land

We love:

  • Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree (32”)

Radiator Springs Racers (Big One to Know)

  • Radiator Springs Racers

  • 40” height requirement

Reality:

  • A lot of people rope drop this

  • Wait times can hit 2 hours

Important:

  • NOT included in Lightning Lane Multi Pass

  • Requires a separate single Lightning Lane purchase

👉 Example:

  • ~$23 per person just to skip the line once

Tip:

  • If you do it, try to go at night

  • Cars Land is really cool when it’s lit up

 Food + Break

  • Sit at Sonoma Terrace

    • Shaded

    • Open seating

    • Counter opens ~11 (beer available)

  • Mobile order from Corn Dog Castle and bring it back to where you’re sitting

Must know:

  • Regular corn dogs + hot link corn dogs

  • Comes with chips

  • Around $11

  • One of the best bang-for-your-buck meals in either park

Couple more tips for CA Adventures

1.    Disney Jr Dance Party. Parents sit, kids dance, there’s fun characters. It’s like a 20 minute show. I would do this – they’re only young once, one day they’ll be too cool for it.  I love watching them dance and smile. Get your camera ready.

2.    In the Animation Studio, you can stand in line to meet Frozen characters. You don’t know who’s going to be there and it changes throughout the day. Sometimes it’s just Anna, or Elsa, before we’ve even seen Olaf.

 DAY 3 — Disneyland

🚀 Rope Drop (If Ready)

If your child liked Thunder:

  • Rope drop Space Mountain

  • Use Rider Switch

 Must-Do

  • Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway

 Tomorrowland

  • Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters

  • Astro Orbitor

  • Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage

⚠️ Skip or be cautious:

  • Star Tours – The Adventures Continue (motion sickness + 40”)

 Star Wars Land (Optional)

  • Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance

Honest take:

  • The land looks really cool

  • The ride is neat

  • But not worth long waits or paying extra (in my opinion)

✔️ Overall Game Plan

  • Day 1: Fantasyland + test Big Thunder

  • Day 2: California Adventure (adjust based on that)

  • Day 3: Bigger rides if they’re ready

  • Bring food → biggest time saver

  • Mobile order whenever possible

  • Use Rider Switch + Single Rider

  • Take midday breaks

  • Best ride times = morning + evening

👉 Don’t stress about doing everything—just follow the kids and enjoy it.
