Monterey Bay Aquarium: Tips for a Fun and Stress-Free Family Visit

If you’re planning a trip to Monterey, the Monterey Bay Aquarium is an absolute must-visit. It’s one of those places that’s just as cool for adults as it is for kids. Think giant kelp forests, touch pools you can actually explore, and some seriously adorable sea otters.

Breakfast and Morning Vibes

We love starting the day with a giant cinnamon roll from Lillie Mae’s and a cup of coffee, enjoying the cool ocean air while waiting in line to be one of the first inside the aquarium. There’s something so refreshing about that crisp coastal breeze that gets you ready for the day ahead.

Pro Tip: Visit Twice — At Opening and Before Closing

The real secret to a great visit is not just getting there when it opens, but also coming back right before closing. Our kids were totally captivated watching the sea otters get fed first thing—it’s the perfect way to start. Then after lunch and naps, we returned near closing time when the crowds had cleared out. We were basically the only ones there, which made revisiting favorite exhibits like the kelp forest and touch pools extra special and peaceful.

Don’t Miss the Kelp Forest

One of the coolest exhibits is the kelp forest. Walking in and seeing those giant kelp strands swaying while fish swim around feels like being underwater without actually getting wet. It’s peaceful and fascinating at the same time.

Touch Pools = Hands-On Fun

If you have little ones (or if you’re just a kid at heart), definitely check out the touch pools. You can gently feel sea stars, sea urchins, and other creatures while the aquarium staff share fun facts. It’s a great way to learn by doing.

Midday Break — Because Naps Are Life

Our kids still nap, so we headed back to the hotel for lunch and some downtime around midday. We ate near our hotel at Alvarado Street Brewery, which had great food and a relaxed vibe. If you prefer to stay near the aquarium, there are plenty of lunch options on Cannery Row too — like The Fish Hopper, Sea Harvest for tasty fish tacos, or Johnny Rockets if you need something quick and kid-friendly.

Parking Made Easy

Parking isn’t too tricky around the aquarium. The Cannery Row Parking Garage and Waterfront Lot are both close and convenient. There’s metered street parking too, but those spots fill up fast. If you want to skip the hassle, some nearby hotels and restaurants offer valet.

Visiting the Monterey Bay Aquarium is a day full of fun and learning for everyone. Getting there early and revisiting later after a break made the whole trip way less hectic and way more enjoyable.
